One of the original thirteen colonies to declare independence from England New Jersey was also a driving force in America's industrial revolution. Today New Jersey is a well-populated economic center of the United States with the highest population density per square mile in the country. In recent decades though New Jersey has seen an alarming increase in blood borne diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis C, a great portion of this increase is in great part due to drug abuse and addiction. New Jersey has for a long time been a major entry port into the United States for drugs like cocaine and heroin. But in recent years club drugs such as MDMA (Ecstasy) and Special K have also become quite popular. Mental health officials and drug policy advocates have long been pushing needle exchange and harm reduction legislature to be passed which would reduce some of the harmful effects drug abuse and addiction have created. Other methods available include treatment centers, residential detox programs and outpatient drug rehab programs all geared at recovery, treatment and relapse prevention. Drug treatment has always been a difficult field but with new treatment methods and policy relapse rates have been steadily decreasing.
